Introduction:
How many times can car insurance be claimed in a year? That's a question I am asked quite often. In fact, many potential clients have even entered into a contract with me by saying something about it being an 'interesting' number or something similar. But what exactly is the number? Is it four times as much as in previous years or twice as much? Who knows…
One of the biggest factors that affect your insurance rates is your claim history. But how many times can you claim a car in a year? What happens if you're hit while parked, in a parking lot, or on a residential street? Or how about when you're hit by someone who was texting at the time of impact? The answer may vary depending on your policy, but we may be able to help.
How many times can car insurance be claimed in a year?
If you have a car insurance policy with a single premium, you can claim your car insurance on multiple occasions in one year.
In most cases, if you make a claim against your car insurance, the insurer will reimburse you for the cost of repairing or replacing your vehicle. However, there are exceptions to this rule.
For example, if you choose to pay for repairs yourself and then make a claim for reimbursement from your insurer, it's possible that you could lose some of your coverage.
The number of times a car insurance claim can be made is dependent on the type of claim and the policyholder.
Types of claims that can be made:
Loss or damage to your car from an accident or a theft.
Medical expenses for injuries sustained in an accident. This also includes expenses for medical treatment if you were not at fault for the accident.
Damages to your car if it is stolen, vandalized, or damaged by fire or water. These are usually covered by the Comprehensive policy rather than Collision cover.
Damage to your car if it is involved in a collision with another vehicle, pedestrian, or animal. This is usually covered by Comprehensive rather than Collision cover.
The answer to this question depends on your state. The insurance company will base the maximum number of claims on the age of the car, the value of the car, and how many miles it has been driven.
Car insurance companies may limit the number of claims issued in a given year depending on factors such as how long you've been with them and how long you've owned a particular vehicle model.
The average cost of car insurance is $1,832 per year based on data from 2016.
Conclusion:
Most of the companies we spoke to gave us a figure of 10,000 miles per year but it is worth noting that claims of under 5,000 miles will be treated differently. This is because in certain situations when a claim is less than 5,000 miles per year, your insurer may consider this to be "not at fault" and therefore will not include any negative mark against your no-claims bonus.
First and foremost – any collision damage you cause to your vehicle whilst driving or parking it is covered by your comprehensive insurance, not a third-party liability. So, technically speaking, you can claim for third party, fire, and theft for any damage you cause to the vehicle and there would be no upsurge in premium.
